FAMILY ROOM MAKEOVER
This quaint two family home is filled with years of treasured memories. It's where one of the current owners grew up and is now where they are raising their own two children. However, they all want to update the home to reflect their personal style and taste. After some extensive structural renovations including raising the ceilings, removing walls to create a more open floor plan, updating the kitchen, adding detailed crown molding and painting all rooms, they asked me to complete the living room, dining room, office and master bedroom. This involved the selection of some furniture as well as all window treatments, rugs, lighting and accessories.
BEFORE...
The homeowners recently purchased a new couch, love seat and chair in a timeless, tan herringbone fabric. They also fell in love with striking, modern, glass lamps and were hoping to use them somewhere in their home. This combination became the inspiration for the living room. Their new style includes some traditional pieces along with the clean contemporary lines of some modern accents as well. This transitional decor is perfect for a young family looking to update their home with a fresh, new look.
We decided to go with a color palette of tan, gray, cream, silver and gold to compliment the new paint color on the walls which is a soft shade of tan. We also incorporated some black to tie in the dining room table, which they already had, as well as the kitchen granite that is visible from the family room.

The large window above the couch lets in an abundance of natural sunlight but was hidden behind heavy, dark blinds. We replaced the blinds with modern gray sheers and silver/tan panels that are mounted near the ceiling and reach from wall to wall framing the new couch with a far more dramatic effect, which it deserves being that it is the first thing you see as you enter the home.
A soft natural tone area rug with a subtle pattern defines the living space adding an inviting and comfortable appeal to the room in a very elegant and tasteful way. The leather ottoman, hand painted ceramic garden stool side table, fur throw blanket and eclectic collection of throw pillows combine the perfect marriage of fabrics, materials and textures giving the room a "tada" effect while maintaining the "cozy" feel that a family of four will need for their everyday life. This room serves as both a family room with kids and friends and a formal living room for entertaining, so the decor needs to lend itself in both ways.
Silk white flower arrangements, candles and silver picture frames finish off the room adding elegance, ambiance, warmth and personality.
The ledges hung above the chair are a piece of art in themselves in how they climb the wall, while they hold a collection of frames displaying sentimental photos as well as silver, glass and ceramic objects that add just the sparkle and interest needed to draw your eye to the shelves.
